We are studying biomes.
  1. Evaluate whether an adaptation gives a plant or animal a survival advantage in a given environment.

Biomes are regions that have similar climates and geography. They also share similar plants (flora) and animals (fauna). Sometimes biomes are referred to as habitats or ecosystems. The Earth has six major land biomes. They include tundra, taiga, temperate(deciduous) forests, tropical rainforests, grasslands and deserts. There are also freshwater and marine biomes.

The tundra biome is near the North Pole and covers 1/5 of the Earth's surface. Explore the Tundra. The taiga biome covers parts of Canada, Europe and Asia. It is the largest biome in the world. Explore the Taiga. The temperate(deciduous) forest biome has four distinct seasons-winter, spring, summer and fall. Explore the Temperate(Deciduous) Forest. The tropical rainforest biome is close to the equator. Explore the Tropical Rainforest. The grassland biome can be found on every continent except Antarctica. Explore the Grassland. The desert has extremely hot days and cold nights. Explore the Desert. The freshwater biome includes rivers and lakes, ponds and streams, and wetlands. Explore the Freshwater Biome. The marine biome includes shorelines, temperate oceans, and tropical oceans. Explore the Marine Biome.

The plants and animals that live in each biome have developed adaptations to help them survive in their biome.
