We are studying plant and animal adaptations. We will be learning the following skills:
  1. Compare and contrast the external features and behaviors that enable different animals and plants (including those that are extinct) to get food, water, and sunlight; find mates; and be protected in specific land and water habitats.
  2. Explain how behaviors, such as hibernation, dormancy and migration give species advantages for unfavorable environmental conditions.
  3. Give examples of ways animals benefit from camouflage.
  4. Evaluate whether an adaptation gives a plant or animal a survival advantage in a given environment.

What is an adaptation?

An adaptation is a characteristic that helps a plant or animal survive. Animals have adaptations to help them live in their environments. Some adaptations are structural, while others are behavioral. Structural adaptations include physical features of the plant or animal. Behavioral adaptations include what plants or animals do to survive.

What is camouflage?

Camouflage is a specific type of coloring or pattern that let a plant or animal blend in with their environment. Being camouflaged helps plants and animals survive because it keeps predators from seeing them. It can also help them hide from prey.

If you can't run, you've got to hide!
